Most skincare marketing talks about what's in a product. Rarely does anyone talk about what was deliberately left out — and why that decision was made in the first place.
For Formula Men Clarifying Cleanser, what we didn't include mattered just as much as what we did. Here's the reasoning behind each exclusion.
No Sulfates
Sulfates (like SLS and SLES) are what give most face washes and shampoos that thick, heavy foam. They're cheap, effective at cutting through oil, and they've been the industry default for decades.
They're also aggressive. Sulfates don't just remove dirt — they can strip away your skin's natural oil barrier along with it. For oily, acne-prone skin specifically, this often backfires: strip too much oil, and skin tends to overcompensate by producing more of it. You end up back where you started, just with drier, more irritated skin along the way.
We built this formula around gentler, amino-acid based cleansing agents instead. Less foam, yes — but a clean that doesn't come at the cost of your skin's barrier.
No Parabens
Parabens are preservatives used to extend a product's shelf life and prevent bacterial growth. They're not inherently dangerous in the concentrations most brands use, but consumer skepticism around them has been building for years, and for good reason — better, safer preservative alternatives now exist that do the same job without the baggage.
We chose to formulate without them, using alternative preservation systems that keep the product stable and safe without relying on an ingredient category so many people actively try to avoid.
No Added Dyes
Bright blue gels and neon-green cleansers look appealing on a shelf, but that color is doing nothing for your skin. Artificial dyes exist purely for visual appeal — they don't clean, treat, or improve anything.
Since dyes offer zero functional benefit and are a common cause of unnecessary skin sensitivity for some users, we left them out entirely. What you see in the tube is the natural color of the actual formula, nothing added for show.
No Mineral Oil
Mineral oil is a cheap, effective occlusive — it sits on top of skin and locks moisture in. The tradeoff is that it can also sit on top of pores, and for oily or acne-prone skin, that's a risk not worth taking.
Instead, we rely on ingredients like Polyglutamic Acid to help lock in hydration in a way that's designed to work with oily and acne-prone skin, not against it.
No Silicones
Silicones are what give a lot of products that instant "silky" slip-on feel. They coat the skin's surface temporarily, which can feel nice in the moment, but they don't offer any real skincare benefit, and they can make it harder for actives underneath to actually absorb into skin.
We left them out so the actives in this formula — Salicylic Acid, Niacinamide, Panthenol — can actually do their job, instead of sitting under a silicone layer.
Why This Matters More Than the Ingredient List Itself
Any brand can list actives on a label. Fewer are transparent about what they intentionally excluded and why. For us, formulating this cleanser wasn't just about adding ingredients that sound good — it was about removing the ones that work against what oily, acne-prone skin actually needs.
